Posted on: 25 June 2017

Storing your items in a safe location is very important. You do not want to have your belongings ruined during storage. That is why it is so important to choose a good storage unit. If you choose a good storage unit then your items will be safe, but choose a bad storage unit and you may lose some of your valuable possessions. When you are choosing a storage unit for your belongings, there are a few things that you really need to be aware of.

Inside Or Outside Units

There are different types of storage units that are available. One choice that you will need to make is whether you want your storage unit in an outside facility or an inside facility. There are many pros and cons to each of the types of storage units, but simply put, an outside unit is going to save you money while an inside unit is going to provide you with more security. Often the inside units are only going to have one or two entries so they can monitor who is coming and going. The inside units also will often utilize security cameras to add protection. Outside units are great because they are very affordable.

Check For Pests

A major problem that you want to avoid with storage units, inside or out, is pests. When you are looking at potential storage units, be sure that you inspect them very closely with pests in mind. Look for any signs of insects or rodents. For rodents look for grease stains on the inside walls and fecal pellets. For insects look for any insect, but pay special attention to all the edges of the unit. Insects such as ants can cause a lot of damage but are easily prevented. Talk to the manager of the facility to see what they are doing to keep the units pest free.

Weather Proof

When you are looking at the storage unit that you are going to purchase, inspect for any water damage. Water damage is one of the leading causes of damage to stored goods. Look for leaks in the roof by looking for water stains on the roof. Inspect the ground for any signs of standing water. However, water does not always come from outside the unit and can be a consequence of of condensation. Be sure that you keep a few silicone sticks in the storage unit to keep water from ruining your belongings.
